This course is a general introduction to the comparative study of culture and language. Topical emphases vary. In cultural anthropology they may include economic and political organization, kinship and marriage, ritual and belief, and the causes and consequences of cultural change in the contemporary world. In Linguistic Anthropology they may include language structure, pragmatics, sociolinguistics and the ethnography of language. Some instructors may devote substantially more time than others to certain topics. Students are advised to consult with individual instructors for details. Restrictions: Students may not hold credit for this course and ANTH-1005 | ANTH-1001.
