This course provides an overview of the major periods and styles in the history of art from the paleolithic period to the present. Art, architecture, and cultural artifacts from around the globe are analyzed within their historical and cultural contexts, with the intention of making connections among cultures and across time periods. Constructs such as authorship, patronage, politics, gender, colonialism and national identity may be highlighted. Students are introduced to the basics of historical research such as examination of historical interpretations and evidence, comparative analysis, primary sources, and bibliographic and narrative skills.
